Pirates, Popes and Presidents- Paintings of the Best New Orleans Restaurants and Bars

Hi Everyone,

I have started a new painting series of New Orleans Restaurants and Bars, focusing on the best of the best---famous places with a rich history and lots of character. I started with Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop and Piano Bar, a fun place on Bourbon Street. Legend has it that the pirate Jean Lafitte owned this building and used it as a blacksmith shop--- and also to sell contraband in defiance of the US embargo act and later to plot piracy on the high seas.

Next I painted the Carousel Bar and Lounge in the Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street in the French Quarter. The Carousel Bar, which was featured in books by Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, has delighted visitors and locals alike since 1949. I stopped in at the Carousel Bar after my wedding (we spent our honeymoon night at the Hotel Monteleone) and realized (it took a while) that it was the bar that was rotating, and not me! It turns out that the bar does one revolution every fifteen minutes.

I also have made prints of this painting available on my website-Click here for Carousel Bar prints

Recently I painted Antoine’s Restaurant, the old- world grand dame of French Creole dining on St. Louis Street in the French Quarter. Since 1840 the Alciatore family has been running Antoine’s. In fact it’s the oldest family-run restaurant in the United States. They invented Oysters Rockefeller and Eggs Sardou and have served several US Presidents and Pope John Paul the Second and were in a bugs bunny cartoon.

Finally I painted Hansen’s Sno-Bliz stand uptown The Hansen Family invented the first ice shaving machine and has had the best sno-balls since 1939. I used to live a block away from there and I included my own cute kids in the painting.

Some of these paintings are still available; all are now available as signed and numbered prints on my website. Please get in touch if you would like to commission a painting of your favorite New Orleans establishment!
